For me, Ghost in the Shell and it’s choral soundtrack are almost synonymous, as I think is true for a lot people, but I never looked into what exactly that style of music actually was. It was just “the GitS music” to me.
But then, a few years ago (and the better part of a decade after watching GitS for the first time), I took a class on the Black Sea region. It covered a lot of things–history, politics, culture, ecology–so when we got to the unit on Bulgaria, the professor played us a few clips of Bulgarian folk music, as she’d done with other countries before:
The instant that video started, the Making of a Cyborg animation began playing vividly in my head. Let me tell you, the cognitive dissonance produced by the combination of that imagery with the imagery of a bunch of smiling women in quaint, colorful folk dresses standing on a stage was really a one-of-a-kind experience.
Composer Kenji Kawai actually tried to hire a Bulgarian choir for their GitS work, but globalization wasn’t that good yet and he couldn’t find any contacts for one in Japan! So Making of a Cyborg is a Japanese choir mimic-ing the style with Bulgarian harmonizations and folk-Japanese vocals on top to sell the vibe (last part probably lost on western audiences but it still hits hard).
